The powder room is the bathroom every guest uses and almost every contractor treats as an afterthought. It's usually only 15–30 sq ft, with no shower, so it can carry a bold design that would be impractical in a daily-use bathroom.
What makes a good powder room
- One statement surface. A stone, fluted-tile or textured wall behind the basin.
- Lighting that flatters. A backlit mirror or wall lights at face height, not one downlight overhead.
- Wall-hung fittings. A wall-hung WC and basin show more floor, so the room feels bigger.
- A basin that's a feature. A vessel basin on a stone counter, or a sculpted wall-hung piece.
- Quiet details. A concealed cistern, an exhaust that's actually silent, and no exposed pipes.
Common powder room mistakes
Too many tile types in a tiny space, an oversized vanity that blocks the door, wallpaper next to a splashing basin, and no ventilation. Each one is easy to avoid when it's planned up front.
Turning a small toilet into a powder room
Many older South Delhi homes have a small guest toilet near the drawing room. Converting it into a proper powder room is one of the highest-impact upgrades in a house, and usually takes about 10 days.
